In the Valley of the Sun, we don’t really have “Autumn” as a season.  We more or less go by the following seasons: Activity Season, Hot Season, Monsoon Season, Pumpkin Season, Not Hot Season (In my opinion, anyway!).

In Activity Season (Feb-April), we have the Waste Management Open, Barrett Jackson, Arabian Horse Show, sometimes the Super Bowl, Spring Training, and extra traffic from tourists and snow birds! During Hot Season, well…it’s just hot (also known as summer). But, at least  you don’t have to shovel sunshine!  Monsoon Season is helpful in cooling the nights off a little and giving us much reprieve from the scorching hot sun.  It’s quite enjoyable and something nearly every Arizonan looks forward to.  Then, there’s pumpkin season.  This is our way of remembering that most of the country is going from hot season to the not so hot season.  We just eat pumpkin everything as soon as possible and for as long as possible.  Before we know it, it will be the Not So Hot Season (Winter, everywhere else).

Pumpkin season is one of my favorites.  Four Peaks Brewery (an amazing brewery I worked at during college) brews Pumpkin Porter!  It’s basically the best beer ever. It’s not like those pumpkin lagers and pumpkin ales.  I don’t care for those.  But I basically lose my mind when Pumpkin Porter comes out.  It’s just so…. delicious and makes me feel like it MIGHT cool off soon!

Some of my other pumpkin favorites are the Pumpkin Blizzard from Dairy Queen, a Pumpkin Bourbon Milkshake, pumpkin roll, pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin pie, and of course the Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks or your local coffee shop if they make it.  Mine does and they even let you call your coffee order in and then it’s ready for you by the time you get there.  Best idea ever!

Do you have pumpkin staples you have to have when pumpkin season rolls around? Let me know!  I’m always down to fall in love with more pumpkin-y things!

Oh, and the best is when pumpkin season overlaps with the end of monsoon season.  Like right now.  It’s getting windy and storms are headed this way.  I can’t wait.  I’ll just be over here having a pumpkin bourbon milkshake and listening to the thunder and rain.
