Just off the corner of the town square in Downtown Prescott and not more than a stone’s throw away from the Prescott Courthouse, is a pretty rad restaurant, bar, & music venue: Far From Folsom. As any music lover might expect upon hearing the name, it is a Johnny Cash-themed venue. Yes, ladies & gents, a Johnny Cash mecca exists in Prescott, Arizona, and it is AWESOME.
I had no idea Far From Folsom existed until recently and I just happened to be making a visit to Prescott a few days after I learned of it. Naturally, I stopped in to pay a visit.
When I first walked in, I wasn’t necessarily surprised that it appeared completely empty because it was a Sunday afternoon and the average age in Prescott is north of 50. There were a couple of people at the bar but it was honestly pretty empty inside. There is a decent size patio out back…and this is where all of the customers were. It was jam-packed and there was live music going on, which is apparently the Sunday tradition from 2-5pm. Out back was the place to be (I swear I even saw a Willie Nelson lookalike sitting at the outside bar). The entire vibe was instantly transformed and it was hard not to feel like you were suddenly part of this secret, happy place where you were going to listen to music, enjoy the blue-sky-day, and have a wonderful time.
We found one empty table and pulled up some chairs to order some beers and enjoy the music. I was in awe of all of the decor devoted to Johnny Cash that made up the ambiance. There was so much of it but it was not overdone at all. It was just right. Even the floors consisted of Johnny Cash song lyrics sprawled across the wood floor in front of the bar instantly making the now-famous tunes pop right into your head.
I wandered around for a bit snapping photos of the inside, even finding an old electric chair neatly tucked into one corner. There’s an upstairs with another bar, a fireplace, and a comfy looking lounge area, presumably for the busier nights.
Far From Folsom also has historical roots to it. It is Whiskey Row’s oldest standing bar. In 1870, it served as a carriage repair shop but was surrounded by saloons, gambling halls, and hotels. By 1890, it joined in on the fun and became its own tavern serving up libations. In July of 1900, a fire swept through and destroyed several blocks. According to the front of Far From Folsom’s menu, the fire began outside of the north wall of the “cash bar” and spared the tavern from damage, thus leaving it as Whiskey Row’s oldest standing bar. Although no longer the wildest part of town necessarily, Whiskey Row rebuilt and is still home to several taverns among other small boutique shops.
Far From Folsom has an impressive menu featuring a $35 burger. Yes– $35.
But, of course, it’s not just any burger. It’s called “Get Shanked in the Yard” and consists of a whole lot of meat, eggs, french fries, onion rings, and more. And, it’s wrapped in bacon. Good luck with that! Sounds good but I didn’t dare try it as I never would have finished. But, if you’re able to finish it in 30 minutes the meal is free and you’ll be the proud new owner of a Far From Folsom shirt along with your photo up on their wall.
If you’re in the Prescott area and looking for a hip spot to stop and grab a bite to eat or a couple of drinks while listening to some live music (Arizona favorites Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers are known to play here on occasion)– Far From Folsom has got you covered and is worthy of a visit. Check them out and then let me know what you think!! Cheers!
